He’s been making us laugh every morning for 20 years with more than 6,000 sketches and 100's of characters, and today Mairead asked Mario Rosenstock – tell me something I don’t know!
The story Mario shared was two-fold. First of all, when he originally applied to Today FM with a cassette tape of his work, there was no interest in Mario - but there was interest in his brother who had also sent in a tape! And secondly, the tape Mario had sent in wasn't of the impressions that he has become so well known for, but was of him interviewing Ginger Rogers... in a bath.
The journey to Gift Grub began after this when Mario moved in to an apartment with a couple of roomates, one of whom was a producer in Today FM. Occasionally she would walk past the bathroom and hear “what sounded like Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness having a shower together” which was in fact Mario doing some impressions. This lead to Mario being asked to appear on a pre-Ian Dempsey breakfast show as Gerry Adams, and the rest is history!
Mario will be going on a nationwide tour in 2020 with the very best of Gift Grub. Dates include:
