While browsing TikTok, Pamela spotted a student doctor talking about the signs of social anxiety and it really struck a chord with her. To find out more, she spoke to psychotherapist Helen Vaughan from Maynooth Counselling and Psychotherapy.
Helen said that a lot of people don't know what social anxiety is, or people who have it don't really talk about it. She broke it down to social situations causing anxiety - whether that be getting on a bus, going to school, making phone calls or being in a busy public place.
Helen spoke about the importance of recognising what situations in particular would set off anxiety, and how you can gradually work up to becoming more comfortable with them.
She also mentioned that a lot of people who suffer with social anxiety might actually be doing quite well in the last year as the pandemic has eliminated many social situations, but they are also losing the coping skills to manage them. However, these can easily be built back up and there is a lot of help available to anyone who needs it.
