The Tokyo Summer Olympics due to take place in a few months time have been postponed to summer 2021, so today Mairead spoke to 3 time Olympian Derval O'Rourke to get some insight on what the athletes might be going through.
Derval told us that when you're in a sport where the Olympics is your pinnacle, you think of your life in four year cycles and spend those years training to hit your peak after four years. Now that the peak has been moved, the athletes will be struggling to figure out where to go from here.
This is bigger than sport of course, and thankfully Irish athletes will continue to receive their funding. The teams around them will now be strategising on the best way to proceed and we look forward to seeing them compete when the games go ahead.
