On the show today, Mairead spoke to Jennifer who brought up an interesting question - do you experience spending guilt?
When you've worked hard to save up for a holiday, a house, a wedding, or just for a rainy day, do you feel the pang of guilt when the time comes to actually spend the money?
Jennifer went though this when she had been saving for months to go travelling, but struggled to actually spend the money once she had it. It seems to be a very Irish thing, particularly common with the generation who's developing years were during the recession.
Judging by the reaction, a lot of listeners could relate to Jennifer. But there's also a good amount of people out there who have no problem spending their hard earned money - you can't take it with you after all!
"I’m just like that girl too. Saved for years for my house and once the time came to spend it, I felt so guilty. I’ve no idea what it is. I think we don’t allow ourselves to be proud of our achievements or something. Paula"
"I have no issue spending my own money. I’ve worked for it so am happy to be able to spend it on whatever I want. John"
"I’m a stay at home parent so I don’t have my own income any more but I’ve always felt guilt at spending my money on nice things for myself. Now I feel guilty for spending my husband’s money on nice things for myself ☺"
"I'm exactly like Jennifer, I keep thinking that if I had not spent that €600 on walking a camino (and drinking tinto!) I would have it now.... For What??? No idea... And the wine was great!! Dancing postie"
