Get ready to fill up the flasks of tea and wrap the sandwiches in tin foil – because fans are allowed back to matches! It was announced yesterday as part of the Roadmap on Living with Covid-19 by Taoiseach Michéal Martin.
From today, 200 spectators will be allowed inside Grounds to watch a game, while a ‘working group’ has been established by the GAA, FAI and IRFU to get fans back into stadia across the country.
But some fans were not happy with what was announced yesterday. Why is that? And is it even safe to have fans back at all?
This morning on Dermot & Dave the lads were joined by Maire Treasa Ní Cheallaigh from OTB Sports, who spoke about the impact having fans attending sporting events could have on our health system.
Maire pointed out that most people who attend games do not travel alone, and this could be a real issue for the spread of the virus. People are being told to limit their social contacts by NPHET at the moment, and travelling in a car, train or bus to attend a game poses a serious risk.
Maire Treasa Ní Cheallaigh from OTB Sports, who is also an accredited Sport Psychologist & Medical Student in RCSI joined Dermot & Dave for a chat this morning.
