Aoibheann Murray has been a night nurse with the Irish Cancer Society since December and says it’s an incredibly privileged position.
She worked in the health care sector for nearly five decades, and when it came time to retire, she still wanted to continue on caring for others.
Aoibheann now spends her nights giving End-of-Life care to cancer patients in their homes;
A very important part of the role is to provide support and resources to the family
Aoibheann says the real heroes are the families of the patient who are often times dealing with the horror of this situation for the first time and who face into it with such bravery.
Speaking on Today FM's Dermot and Dave, she explains the level of trust that is required;
You're going into somebody's house, they've never seen you before, late at night, you're either helping them or caring for their loved ones
She also gives us some insight into how difficult, yet incredibly rewarding, her job is.
A very small amount of funding for this vital service comes from the health service but the majority of funds are raised through fundraisers like Dare To Care.
Every cent raised will go towards helping people who have been diagnosed with cancer and their families
