Adventures don't get much bigger than this!
Have you ever wanted to get away from it all? Just shut up shop, pack your bags and get outta dodge? Well 10 young Irish men have done exactly that and it sounds insane.
Two years ago, a group of mates from Cork had a notion that they should buy a boat and head out on the open sea. As you do.
After a few brewskies on a Christmas night out, they decided to move to Australia to make a few dollars and put some wind behind the sails of their idea.
Earlier this month, the explorers got their vessel (An Seanchaí) and hit off into the unknown. And it really is the unknown, because none of them have ever sailed before. Some of them had never even been on a boat!
Corkonians Evan Lotty, Mark Kenny, David Leahy, Damien Collins and Conor Blackton form just part of the crew, along with Eoin Dennehy, Gerald O’Sullivan and Tipperary native, Paul Ryan. They will be joined by Duncan Tsu and Brian McCauliffe over the coming months.
Dermot and Dave chat to Evan Lotty live from Phuket, where him and the boys are still on the first leg of their journey.
Evan talks us through their audacious adventure and the planning that went into it, "a lot of weekends were just dedicated to research and figuring out how to sail from a book".
When asked what book it was, Lotty's answer had us in knots, "Sailing For Dummies".
With a 40-foot GYPSY Monohull yacht under them and hurleys at the ready, the €15,000 project is in full flow and we cannot wait for more updates from this group of headers. Balls of steel I tell ya!
