Young workers will hold a protest outside the Dáil today calling for an end to sub-minimum wages.

The Mandate Trade Union says the Government should take on board advice from the Low Pay Commission and make sure all workers are paid fairly, regardless of their age.

The commission has also recommended removing the ability for employers workers under the age of 20 different rates to older staff.

Currently, the National Minimum Wage Acts allow for lower, or sub-minimum rates for people aged under 20.

Greg Caffrey from Mandate, says young workers are losing out despite doing the same work as their colleagues.

" A worker who is 19-years of age can be paid €11.43 an hour. A worker who is 18-years of age can be paid €10.16 per hour. And workers under-18 can be paid €8.89 per hour.

Youth activist Adam O'Ceallaigh says the argument that older people have more financial burdens is not fair.

" I think everybody in this day-and-age in Ireland is experiencing the cost of living crisis to some degree.

"Currently young people are not being treated fairly by our economic system.

"For us to be even having the conversation around bringing in that minimum wage equity, rather than even having the conversation to push-on towards getting it to reaching that Living Wage standard of €14.80 an hour, is something that's mind boggling to me".
