Young People In Ireland Living At home Longer Compared To Other European Countries

Irish people are living in their childhood home for significantly longer than young people in other European countries.

Analysis from Eurostat found the average Irish person moves out for good at 28, up from almost 26.9 years old last year.

The average European leaves home at 26 years old.

Irish men take longer to fly the nest than women, with the average man leaving at 28, while women generally leave the parental home at 27.

The countries with the youngest average age are Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Estonia, which are all under 23 years old.

Croatia has the highest average age for moving out of home at 31.8 years old, followed by Slovakia at 31, Greece at 30.6 and Spain at 30.4.

Eurostat also noted Ireland's low overcrowding rate with only 4.4% of young people living in overcrowded accommodation.

Romania (59.4%), Bulgaria (55.3%) and Latvia (54.8%) had the highest numbers of young people, aged 15 to 29, living in overcrowded conditions.
