Workers at an Iceland store in Dublin are staging a sit-in after they were told their jobs were gone.

Staff at the Coolock branch say they got no notice the store wasn't opening this morning. It's believed it is one of four stores which didn't open its doors this morning.

Examiners were appointed at the Irish operations of the supermarket - which allows them to continue to operate while investors are found to save the business.

Last week the Food Safety Authority recalled 'all imported frozen food of animal origin' from the store.

Jeanette Joyce is in the store - she outlined what happened this morning:

"We turned up for our work as normal.

"Arrived about 8.40am to be met with my manager sitting outside on the steps.

"She'd been asked to leave the building.

"That was the first we had heard of it.

"We got no notification at all that this was coming."

Labour TD Aodhán Ó Ríordáin was at the store this morning and said, "workers have been treated absolutely disgracefully by the company and it’s time for Minister Coveney to step up and get clarity for these workers.

“The business has gone into examinership and the store has effectively closed, but staff have not been told. They turned up for work this morning only to be told they have no jobs. This is an absolutely crazy scenario."

A spokesperson for the Department of Enterprise said any employee who believe their rights have been breached should contact the Workplace Relations Commission.

Today FM News has contacted Iceland stores and the appointed examiner for comment.
