The free contraception scheme introduced earlier this year will be extended to women aged 26 from the first of January next year.

The scheme will be further expanded to include 27 to 30-year-olds from 1 September 2023.

Under the current scheme, those aged 17 to 25 can visit GPs for free consultations on contraception.

The scheme has over 2,200 GPs, primary care centres, family planning centres and student health clinics signed up to contracts with the HSE to provide the service since September.

The Department of Health says 1,850 pharmacies are also participating in the scheme.

Women in the qualifying age groups can have prescriptions for contraceptives filled at their local pharmacy of choice.

All costs are fully covered by the State and are free of charge to the patient.

For Long-Acting Reversible Contraceptives (LARCs), women patients return to a service provider participating in the scheme to have the device fitted, and subsequently removed.
