One of EastEnders' most beloved characters bid her final farewell tonight. 

Peggy Mitchell, played by Dame Barbara Windsor, took her final breath in tonight's episode after a long battle with cancer.

Peggy ended it all by taking a fatal overdose in the final scene, watched over by the ghost of Pat Butcher:

The 78-year-old has been in the BBC soap for 22 years - beginning in 1994.
