US media is reporting that the Washington navy yard gunman contacted police last month to say he was hearing voices.
According to the Washington Post, Aaron Alexis called police in Rhode Island and told them he was being followed by three people whose voices he kept hearing.
He also told officers that he was a naval contractor. The police subsequently contacted naval authorities in Rhode Island.
The FBI is investigating whether the naval station involved ever followed up on the police report.
34 year old Aaron Alexis went on a shooting rampage at the Washington Navy Yard yesterday, killing 12 people, before he was shot by police.
It's emerged that he legally bought a firearm in Virginia a number of weeks ago, and passed all background checks.
