A murder investigation is underway in Co Cavan following the death of a 54-year-old woman.
The body of Patricia Kierans was located in a house on the outskirts of Bailieborough, after an armed man barricaded himself in a bar in the town.
Footage of the scene where the woman's body was found:
A sister of the dead woman contacted Gardai in Bailieborough at 6 o'clock on Thursday evening, when she was unable to contact her.
As part of their inquiries, Gardai called to the Square Bar in the Market Square in the town (pictured below), to speak to a man known to the woman.
On their arrival, the 56 year old brandished a firearm and order the officers, staff and customers to leave the premises, which he barricaded himself inside.
Gardai then discovered the body of Patricia Kierans, with a gunshot wound, in the Drumbannon estate.
Her youngest son was travelling to Australia to join his two older brothers and sister as the incident was unfolding.
Following lengthy negotiations, the man at the centre of the siege left the bar and was arrested at around 3am on Friday morning, after a nine hour stand-off with Gardai.
The man, who underwent an assessment yesterday evening in Cavan General Hospital in Cavan town, is being held under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act in connection with her death.
Gardai say they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the investigation, however they're appealing for anyone with information to contact them.
