30 people, including 23 teenagers, are recovering after being rescued off the Co. Cork coast today.

The Astrid sail training vessel suffered engine failure just before midday and ran aground close to Sovereign Island west of Kinsale harbour.

Strong winds are also believed to have played a role.

The Dutch vessel, pictured below, was part of a tallship fleet sailing into Kinsale as part of an event for The Gathering.

The people on board were of Irish, Dutch, French, English and Spanish nationalities.

None of the crew or passengers suffered any serious injuries.

A major rescue operation was launched, involving the Kinsale, Courtmacsherry, Ballycotton and Crosshaven lifeboats along with the Waterford and Shannon based Coastguard helicopters.
