The current timeline for sitting the Leaving Cert in June and receiving results in August is not fit for purpose.
The Irish Universities Association will tell the Oireachtas Education Committee later that results should be given out in June.
It adds it will allow for colleges to make offers to students in July.
Director-General of the IUA, Jim Miley, says this will give students and colleges more time to prepare for the new academic year:
"The vast majority of the curriculum in schools is finished pre-Easter anyway, and they're into revision then.
"This could be brought in with exams in May, results in June. Students and their families will know what they're doing six or more weeks before college starts."
