The European Parliament has formally voted today to introduce a universal charging cable from 2024.
The proposal was agreed upon in June, but it's been given formal approval today with USB-type C chargers becoming the norm.
The new rules apply to all small and medium devices including:

Earbuds
Keyboards
Computer mice
Portable navigation devices
Smartphones
Tablets
Digital cameras
Headphones and headsets
Handheld videogame consoles
Portable speakers
While Laptops have been given an extra 40 months to make the change.
The EU said the new rules aim to make products more sustainable, reduce electronic waste, and make consumers’ lives easier.
Since consumers can now use their old chargers with new devices, they will no longer be obliged to purchase a charger with their new devices.
Meanwhile, charging speeds will be harmonised for all devices that support fast charging, ensuring consumers can charge their devices at the same speed as any charger.
Companies will also be obliged to offer customers precise information on the charging characteristics of new devices.
The rule will be applied in late 2024.
