Donald Trump's legal team has described the impeachment charges against him as a "dangerous attack" on democracy.
In their first formal response, they say the articles are a "brazen" attempt to interfere in the presidential election this year.
The Democrats have also laid out their case ahead of the proceedings, claiming President Trump has betrayed public trust.
Opening statements in the trial will begin on Tuesday.
