Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said her "music was loved around the world and her talent was unmatched and beyond compare".
Tánaiste Micheál Martin described her as one of Ireland's greatest musical icons.
Sinead was known for her political activism - shining a spotlight on racism and police brutality as well as child abuse within the Catholic Church.
Her friend, Fiachna Ó Braonáin from the Hothouse Flowers, says her bravery was inspiring.
" She was right, all those years ago, she was right, and she saw stuff, you know, and spoke about stuff that was going on that nobody else was talking about at the time.
"She was right about the Catholic Church in Ireland. She was right about child abuse. She was right about all of those things, and she highlighted them fearlessly and with a passion".
Sinead was a force of nature. A brilliant songwriter & performer whose talent we will not see the like of again. Such passion, such intense presence & a beautiful soul, who battled her own personal demons courageously. Be at peace dear Sinead, you will forever be in our hearts. t pic.twitter.com/lJVhGfuTPA
