The Transport Minister says a range of new measures to reduce car use are not anti-driver.

Higher parking fees, incentives to car-pool and congestion charges are among 'polluter pays' 35 proposals which are due go out to public consultation.

The proposals include, cars to be taxed based on their size, or how environmentally friendly they are.

It's part of Government plans to cut car journeys by 20% by 2030. The proposals will open for public consultation in April.

Insurance companies would also be encouraged to offer lower premiums to those who drive less.

Local councils will also have the power to introduce congestion charges.

Minister Eamon Ryan says the aim is to make any cars that are on the road environmentally friendly.

"Our world is burning. Climate change is accelerating before our eyes.

"EVs are a key and valuable part of the solution. We're incentivizing that aid through the tax system by making it cheaper to buy the cars.

"So yes, EVs will continue to be supported because we do need to stop burning fossil fuels urgently".
