Motorists advised to take caution

Today and tomorrow are expected to be the busiest days on Irish roads as drivers head home for the holidays.

Motorists are being advised to be wary of weather conditions, to allow extra time for their journey and to obey the rules of the road.

On average, the AA's breakdown service receives around 350 callouts every day during the festive period.

Barry Aldworth from the AA says drivers should pack the essentials:

"It's no harm to have a set of jump leads in the car," he said. "If you require medication on a regular basis no harm to have some of that in the glove compartment just in case you experience a breakdown and you're stuck waiting. Similarly, you just want to bring the essentials that you would normally have in the car - a di-icer and other essentials for winter."
