Today marks the 25th anniversary of the murder of Sophie Toscan du Plantier
The 39 year old French filmmaker was killed outside her holiday home in west Cork on December 23 1996.
The case remains unsolved and nobody has ever been charged
Interest in the case was revived this year with the showing of two documentary series on the killing
Journalist Senan Molony covered the story at the time and says the failure to solve the case reflects poorly on the Irish justice system:
"It's an open would on the Irish criminal justice system."
Molony says it shows that Gardaí at the time were unable to deal with a massive crime at a local level where there wasn't much experience.
"Undoubtedly the Christmas timing of it played into some very unfortunate lapses in terms of securing the premises, in terms of getting a pathologist down in time, to have a hope of determining the exact time of death."
