A status yellow thunderstorm warning has been issued for Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Wicklow, Cavan, Donegal, Cork, Tipperary, Waterford, and Leitrim.
The alert which remains in place until 9pm tonight.
Met Eireann is forecasting thunderstorm activity today, with heavy rainfall, which may cause some flooding locally.
Meanwhile the very warm weather will continue to occur over Leinster, where a status yellow high temperature warning remains in place, with daytime temperatures of 25 to 28 degrees.
Heat stress, especially for the more vulnerable, remains a risk as a result.
A condition orange high fire risk also remains in place in all areas where hazardous fuels such as dead grasses and shrubs, heather and gorse exist.
Coillte and fire service personnel are currently battling a significant forest fire at Crone Woods County Wicklow.
The fire is affecting areas of forested lands, and also the Wicklow Mountains National Park.
An Air Corps helicopter is in attendance to assist in efforts to bring the blaze under control.
Coillte is asking the public to avoid the use of all outdoor fires and other open ignition sources such as barbeques and cigarettes at this time.
Forest owners, farmers, rural dwellers and other countryside users are asked to be extremely vigilant regarding fire activity, to report any suspicious or illegal activity to An Garda Siochana, and to report all fires immediately to the Fire and Emergency Services via 112/999.
