Thousands are expected at a protest in Dublin later, calling for 100 percent redress for pyrite and mica-affected homeowners in the west and north-west.

Campaigners argue the government's defective block scheme, which covers 90 percent of repair works, remains unaffordable for many families.

Ministers will discuss the issue at Cabinet this morning as they seek to formulate a response, while a Dail debate on extending the scheme to full compensation will take place later.

Donegal homeowner, Eileen Doherty, says the cost of repairs is causing huge distress:

'It's anything thing from tens of thousands to six-figure sums and families just can't afford that...our homes are crumbling around us, our homes are not safe.'
