Struck off solicitor Thomas Byrne is due to be sentenced today for fraud, deception and the theft of 52 million euro.

Following his conviction earlier this month, the 47 year old with an address at Mountjoy Square, Dublin, is Ireland’s biggest white collar criminal.

Thomas Byrne was convicted on 50 charges of deception, fraud and the theft of nearly 52 million from 6 financial institutions.

The jury heard at the height of the Celtic Tiger the former solicitor forged documents transferring his client’s properties into his name; he then used the houses as collateral on bank loans.

He claims he was acting under threat from his business partner John Kelly who he said had a voracious appetite for money.

The maximum sentence for most of these theft and fraud offences is 10 years in jail.
