Paul Mescal's mum says the family is shocked and overjoyed at his Oscar nomination.
The 26-year-old Kildare native has been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in the film, Aftersun, and would be the youngest winner of the category ever.

But he would have to beat off competition from Colin Farrell who is nominated for his role in Banshees of Inisherin.
The Kildare native celebrated the news with his family over a WhatApp video call, as he's currently starring in a production of 'Streetcar Named Desire' in London's West End.
Paul's mum Dearbhla, says the news hasn't fully sunk in yet:
"Like, he said himself yesterday on our phone call - it is bananas.
"You know, he literally said that like, it's crazy, you know, and you're, you know the way that you're shocked, you put your hand to your mouth - we were all like [that]."
The Irish film industry received 14 nominations in total on a record-breaking day for the sector.

Nine were given to the Martin McDonagh film Banshees of Inisherin, including Best Picture.
Five actors from the movie set off the west coast of Ireland were nominated for their roles.
The Oscars take place in Los Angeles in March.
