A 17-year-old boy, who attempted to murder a woman he met online in Dun Laoghaire two years ago, has been resentenced to 11 years, with a review after 7 years.

The boy was 15 when he lured Stephanie Ng to an isolated area at the Sea Front two days before Christmas 2017, grabbed her from behind, choked her, before slashing her neck and leaving her.

He was originally given an 11-year detention with a review after 5 years, in 2023.

The DPP was successful in appealing, and the Court of Appeal found the sentence to be unduly lenient.

Today, the court resentenced him to 11 years detention, with a review in 7 years instead.

It found the level planning and premeditation meant even as attempted murders go, the offence was at the higher end of the scale.

It says this review gives the best chance of a reintroduction back into society and gives the boy a date to work towards.

The court heard the boy is doing well in Oberstown, but remains "a high risk" of harm to himself and others.
