Taxi fares are set to increase by 4.5 per cent.
The National Transport Authority is proposing the rise because the cost of operating a taxi has risen by 4 per cent since 2017.
The NTA also plans to make paying by card standard practice in all taxis.
Vinny Kearns, former vice-president of the National Taxi Drivers Union, says the price increase is badly needed.
He says, "by the time this change is implemented, you're going to be looking at next year and by the time they carry out another review it'll be three years. So I think over the period of the last 3 to 4 years it's more than justified. The cost of insurance, for instance, 4 or 5 years ago was probably €1700 or €1800 per car, now it's anywhere between €6000 and €6500 for a new entrant coming into to rent a taxi."
