Taxi Driver Who Raped Passengers Also Guilty Of Raping Child
A Dublin taxi driver who was recently convicted of raping two female passengers is also awaiting sentence for raping a 7-year-old girl over ten years ago.
The 50-year-old, of Melrose Crescent in Clondalkin, was found guilty earlier this year but couldn’t be named until now.
The court heard Raymond Shorten knew the young girl’s family, and first raped her just a few days after her mother died.
He raped her on another occasion when she was also just seven or eight years old, and he sexually assaulted her in his car that same year.
When contacted by gardai, he thought it was a “windup.” He denied all wrongdoing and accused her of lying, but was found guilty on all charges earlier this year.
Through her victim impact statement, the survivor outlined how at the time, she was too young to understand what was happening, and only realised what he did to her was wrong after attending sex education classes in school.
As nerve-wracking as the trial was, she said she felt some closure when he was convicted.
Shorten will be sentenced for this on the 19th of this month, and just three days later, he’ll be sentenced for raping two female passengers in his taxi two years ago.
