The Taoiseach has said evidence at the Public Accounts Committee by RTÉ yesterday has raised questions about company law being followed.

The broadcaster's Chief Financial Officer, Richard Collins, said in his view the public may have been defrauded by secret payments to presenter Ryan Tubridy.

He also told the Committee the former Director General, Dee Forbes, informed him the payments were consultancy fees for Ryan Tubridy's agent, Noel Kelly, rather than direct payments.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, was asked whether there is a case for the gardaí to investigate the situation.

"I'm not sure we're at the point yet, but it did concern me to hear that payments were, or it would appear anyway, that payments were made by RTÉ to outside contractors for work that wasn't actually done. And that does raise issues in terms of accounting rules and company law".

RTÉ executives answered questions from politicians for a second day in a row on Thursday, over the secret payments to Ryan Tubridy.

During a meeting of the Public Accounts Committee on Thursday, it emerged money from the so-called 'barter account' was spent on client trips to the Rugby World Cup, the Champions League Final and U2 concerts.

The committee was told that €111,000 was spent on tickets and travel for clients to the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan, and €26,000 on the Champions League final in Madrid.
