Tanaiste Simon Coveney's met with the new Northern Secretary Julian Smith in Belfast.
The Minister for Foreign Affairs says he stressed the need to get Stormont back up and running.
He also focused on the importance of the two governments working together, as co-guarantors of the Good Friday Agreement.
