Syria's president says his country will hand over its chemical weapons to international control.
Bashar al-Assad says the country will hand over its stockpile of weapons following a suggestion by the Russian government.
He added that the move had nothing to do with a similar suggestion by the US, or the threat of an American military operation.
He also said Syria had sent documentation to the UN to sign an international convention forbidding the use of chemical weapons in future.
