A new nationwide survey out this morning on Irelands beaches and harbours has shown disappointing results.
The litter study by IBAL shows that beaches which were clean during the last survey have deteriorated.
The litter levels in various coastal areas are on the rise.
Spokesperson with IBAL Conor Horgan says our standards are dropping.
"The results are disappointing because only a quarter of our beaches and harbours are clean.
"We've seen a signifcant reduction in the number of clean beaches, among them the very popular beaches such as Lahinch, Brittas Bay, Curracloe Portmarnock, Strandhill and Clogherhead.
"All of these were clean last time out and this time they've slipped to 'moderately littered' so they are not heavily littered but they are certainly not as clean as they should be."
