Supermarket Prices Increase 4.5% Since Start Of The Year

Prices in supermarkets have increased by 4.5% since the New Year.

Increases of 3.36% were recorded during the same period last year, showing that supermarket inflation continues to be well above the rest of the economy.

Ciarán Fitzgerald is a food economist, he believes there are many factors behind the increases:

"Some of the reasons for food inflation is to do with the onslaught of the Green Party and environmentalists against things like beef and dairy production.

"In meats in particular you've got a major reduction as people have exited the sector because of all the noise.

"Then, because of scarcity the prices are going up."

Details from Kantar show shoppers are buying less items each time they go to the supermarket - however they are going more often.

The data shows Dunnes Stores has the largest market share of the major shops.
