Former Sinn Féin TD Brian Stanley, has accused Mary Lou McDonald of abusing Dail privilege in remarks she made about him.

The Laois-Offaly TD, resigned from the party over the weekend for reasons which are still unclear.

In a statement on Tuesday night, Mr Stanley said Sinn Féin has the clear intention of damaging his reputation to shift the spotlight off the party.

Mr Stanley also reiterated that he refutes the contents on the complaint made against him

"Mary Lou Mc Donald abused Dáil privilege in a desperate attempt to shift the focus from her own party’s practices regarding a” complaint” against me, the contents of which I refute.

"This comes after days of inaccurate statements and insinuations from Sinn Féin, along with selective briefings delivered with the clear intention of damaging my reputation and to shift the spotlight off the party."

Speaking the Dáil on Tuesday, Mary Lou McDonald made statements about a 'very serious' complaint concerning Mr Stanley, which left the person involved 'traumatised and distressed'.

Deputy Stanley also said the Sinn Féin leader's comments, reveal what he described as "the level of double standards that now operate and pertain in the party".

Sinn Fein TD Pearse Doherty, says the only person who can clarify the nature of this complaint is Brian Stanley himself.

"Brian has said stuff like kangaroo court. Brian was represented by a solicitor and a barrister at the hearing of the inquiry.

Brian is the only person who can bring this information to the public light or the complainant. Maybe he should do so."

Brian Stanley's surprise resignation also means the Chairperson's position on the Oireachtas Public Accounts Committee is now vacant.

Committee members have said they won't co-operate with another Sinn Féin Chairperson until party controversies are addressed.

On Tuesday, it was also revealed that former senator, Niall O Donnghaile, had sent inappropriate text messages to a 17-year-old boy.

Mr O Donnghaile, sent the messages in September 2023 prompting a complaint to the party and a reference to the PSNI, who found no offence occurred.

Mary Lou McDonald told the Dáil on Tuesday, that the party didn't disclose the real reason behind Mr O Donnghaile's resignation out of concern for his health.

"Following the complaint, we were advised that Niall O Donnghaile, was again suffering from a mental health crisis, and was deemed medically unfit for his work.

"We were very worried that publicly naming him would be dangerous to his health.

"That is not to make an excuse for his behavior, but we had very serious concerns for his mental health and his safety."
