The leaders of Sinn Fein and Fianna Fáil have had a 15-minute phone call about government formation this evening.
Micheál Martin reiterated his party would not be forming an administration with Sinn Fein.
He says the parties' views on economic and other issues are incompatible.
A party spokesperson has said "Fianna Fáil has a mandate and that it is our prerogative and duty to try to form a government. No one grouping in the Dail can force another grouping to form a government when there are such incompatible views on economic policy and other issues.”
Mary Lou McDonald's told Michael Martin the people who voted for her party are angry Fianna Fail is denying them the respect of sitting down with their representatives.
Deputy McDonald says she will write again to Micheál Martin in the coming days to set out the substance of their position and she's asked him to do the same.
