Around 2,500 Schools Closed As Storm Barra Hits Ireland

Thousands of homes and businesses are without power this morning, as Storm Barra hits the south and west coasts.

A wind speed of 113km per hour has just been recorded off the county's west coast.

There are Status Red wind warnings in place for Cork and Kerry.

Clare, which is currently under an orange warning, will hit status red from 4pm this afternoon.

Orange wind warnings have been in place for Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Waterford, Galway, Mayo and Wexford.

In addition, Dublin, Louth, Wickow and East Meath all joined the list of counties under an orange warning from 8am.

Meanwhile the Education Minister says around 2,500 schools have been forced to close as a result of the storm.

The Department of Education asked all schools in orange and red level counties to remain shut.

"It would always be the case where schools in a red area would be stood down," said Education Minister Norma Foley.

"It is the advice of Met Eireann that it is likely that those found in an orange area that that status will, throughout the day, perhaps revert to a red status."
