RTÉ To Reveal Plans To Cut 400 Staff
RTÉ's new strategic plan is expected to reveal details of spending cuts.
It's expected 400 workers will be made redundant through a voluntary process over the next four years.
The broadcaster has told the Government that it will reduce staff numbers by 20%, in the wake of the payments scandal at the media company.
Irish Secretary of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ), Seamus Dooley, says announcements through 'leaks to the media' was a “further blow to staff” when morale is at an all-time low.
"It has appeared in the media before staff heard from the director general. We were scheduled to have a meeting today at 12 o'clock, followed by a lunchtime presentation, townhall meeting. That's now being pre-empted by leaks to the media.
"As the Irish Secretary to the NUJ, I'm not criticising any journalist for getting a leak, but we did RTÉ to make the document available at an earlier stage".
RTE journalist, Emma O'Kelly, and chair of the NUJ Dublin Broadcasting Branch, says there are real fears amongst staff about job losses at RTÉ.
"We're hearing today about cuts to one in five staff, and more programmes being pushed out into the private sector, but we've heard nothing about a vision about what RTÉ should be, from Government.
"So, to me, all of this is putting the cart before the horse. We're being told to slash, but we've no idea of what Government wants".
Further proposals include a plan to increase RTÉ's production operations in Cork and to downsize the broadcaster's Dublin campus in Donnybrook.
It's expected more content will also be produced by independent companies.
