The chairwoman of the Revenue Commissioners will today explain to TDs why some people will end up paying next year's property tax in 2013.

Josephine Feehily will explain why the Revenue is asking people paying by debit or credit card to hand over the payment now.

It comes as the Revenue extends the original deadline for people to make their postal returns for next year's tax.

The furore over the Property Tax has become an unlikely sticking point for the government, with Labour openly admitting its disappointment that people paying with debit cards are being charged for the tax immediately.

Today Josephine Feehily will try to explain to the Oireachtas Finance Committee why people who pay by different methods are being asked to pay up at different times of the year.

It's understood that because of data protection concerns, the Revenue doesn't think it's allowed to keep someone's credit card details on file until the new year - but yesterday some members pointed out that if the likes of Ticketmaster and Amazon can keep your credit card details, the Revenue shouldn't be any different.

With the confusion surrounding next year's tax - and the complicated form sent to householders - the Revenue has extended the deadline for postal returns until next Thursday.
