Rent pressure zones will be extended until the end of 2021.
The legislation keeping them in place was due to expire at the end of the year.
Cabinet Ministers agreed to the proposals this morning.
Rent can only be increased by 4% a year in rent pressure zones.
Ministers also agreed that the qualification outside of Dublin will also be tweaked.
Last week, two additional areas were designated as rent pressure zones - Navan in Co. Meath and Limerick City East.
