A new study has warned that long-term consumption of protein shakes could reduce a person's life span.

University of Sydney researchers have looked into the potential side effects from long-term high protein intake.

They say that excess consumption of BCAAs can also negatively impact mood and lead to weight gain.

Diets high in protein and low in carbohydrates were also shown to have detrimental effects for health in mid to later life.

Mice were fed double the normal amount of BCAAs (200%), the standard amount (100%), half (50%) or one fifth (20%) for life.

Thos fed 200% BCAAs increased their food intake, resulting in obesity and a shortened lifespan.
