President Michael D Higgins is to become the first Irish head of state to make an official visit to the UK.
It was announced yesterday evening that the President has accepted an invitation from Queen Elizabeth to go to Britain next year.
The State engagement, which will take place in April, follows the visit to Ireland by Queen Elizabeth in 2011- the first by a reigning British monarch in a hundred years.
The Taoiseach Enda Kenny claims the historic move demonstrates, ' the warm and positive relationship that now exists between Ireland and the United Kingdom'.
