Pope Francis says he supports having laws for same-sex civil unions.
He made the comments during an interview for a documentary, that premiered at the Rome Film Festival earlier today.
In it, the Pope says homosexuals have the right to be in a family and that they are children of God.
The Catholic News Agency is reporting that the Pontiff says the following:
“Homosexuals have a right to be a part of the family. They’re children of God and have a right to a family. Nobody should be thrown out, or be made miserable because of it.”
“What we have to create is a civil union law. That way they are legally covered,” the pope said. “I stood up for that.”
The Catholic Church does not celebrate or recognize same-sex marriages.
