College fees could be cut by around €500 as part of a plan to tackle the rising cost of living.
It's reported the government is considering a plan to reduce the student contribution fee for the new academic year.
The Irish Times reports higher education institutions are being advised to delay collection of registration charges, in case they end up having to refund students.
Students who don't qualify for a grants are liable for a €3,000 annual contribution fee.
The government is also said to be looking at ways to expand numbers eligible for SUSI grants.
The plans are thought to among measures expected to be introduced by government in September to combat the cost of living crisis.
