A plan to place a 23% VAT rate on vitamins and food supplements is being delayed until November.
It had been argued the move, which was due to come in this Friday, could affect people's health and wellbeing.
More than 60,000 people had signed a petition calling for the tax to be scrapped.
Revenue says it's holding off on the measure while the Finance Minister examines the policy.
The tax would affect all vitamins, minerals and fish oils, including iron, vitamin C, omega 3 and probiotics.
Health Stores Ireland says it would threaten 1,800 jobs and 200 independent health stores.
