Gardai have confirmed an elderly woman has died on board a transatlantic fight which was forced to divert to Shannon Airport.
The United Airlines flight 961 (UA961) was flying from Frankfurt to Newark when a 71 year old woman suffered a cardiac arrest.
The flight turned around while flying over the Atlantic, and landed safely at Shannon shortly after 2pm.
The elderly woman was tended to by medical professionals when the plane landed.
Gardai confirmed this evening that the woman was pronounced dead a short time later.
Her body has been removed to University Hospital Limerick where a post mortem exam is due to take place.
Adam Lisberg was a passenger on board the aircraft at the time of the incident:
Okay, avgeeks ... here’s what it looks like when a 767 with too much fuel onboard lands on the longest runway in Ireland. Shannon has 10,495 feet, and we used about 10,490 of them. pic.twitter.com/Bf4OUchBrh
