RTE Director-General Noel Curran has said the national broadcaster could not match the offer made by independent station NewsTalk for Pat Kenny.
Earlier the veteran broadcaster announced he was leaving RTE to join Newstalk in the autumn.
Speaking on the Last Word Noel Curran said Pat Kenny was a loss to Montrose, but they couldn't counter the offer.
