The HSE has confirmed that partners of pregnant women will now be allowed to attend the 20-week scan.
They have been prevented from attending since earlier this year due to fears over the potential spread of COVID-19.
Last week, a petition signed by more than 53,000 people calling for the restrictions to be lifted was handed into Cork University Hospital.
The HSE has now confirmed that partners will be allowed to attend as 'essential companions' from this week.
They will also be allowed attend any surgical interventions.
Caroline Cumming from Uplift, the organiser of the petition, said it is a step in the right direction.
“I am cautiously happy,” she said.
“This is obviously great news for a lot of people; it will make a big impact on a lot of couple’s experiences but it is really just the first step of what should be many.
“There are a lot more changes we still need to see.”
