Over 34,000 Reports Of Domestic Violence This Year So Far

There were 12,000 more reports of domestic abuse incidents this year compared with 2017.

Those working with victims say that while reporting and awareness has increased, the figures still don't cover the true scale of the problem.

"It's shocking, it's continuous and epidemic - but it's been epidemic for a very long time," said CEO of Safe Ireland, Mary McDermott.

The figures show there were 34,410 reports of domestic abuse incidents during the first 11 months of this year.

It’s a 56% jump when compared with 2017.

Gardaí have been actively reaching out to victims during the pandemic to make sure they're safe.

Mary McDermott wants that to continue;

"They often get a lot of flack, but for example during Covid Operation Faoiseamh was extremely successful, and from the point of view of Safe Ireland - we would like Operation Faoiseamh mainstreamed and fully resourced."

A report from Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council last month highlighted the lack of a domestic violence refuge in the area - saying the county urgently needs 22 family units.

Noeline Blackwell from the Dublin rape crisis centre says it’s a serious problem;

"The refuge spaces just aren't there, not in comparison to what the Council of Europe for example say we should have."

The women’s aid 24-hour freephone helpline is available on 1800 341 900.
