New laws are on the way in a bid to improve online safety.
The measures from the Communications Minister will establish an Online Safety Commissioner to improve oversight.
In a speech this morning Communications Minister Richard Bruton will call for an end to self regulation by social media giants like Facebook and Twitter.
He'll announce plans to establish an Online Safety Commissioner, which will have a number of powers.
It will examine an certify whether the safety standards a company has in place are good enough.
The Commissioner will also act as an appeals body
So if someone complains to a social media company about a post that includes cyberbullying for example, and that company doesn't take it down, that decision can be appealed to the Commissioner.
It would then have the power to fine the outlet, seek an injunction to enforce its decision, and even issue criminal proceedings against the company.
The Commissioner will also operate a name and shame list of companies that refuse to co-operate with the regulator.
Under the new laws Minister Bruton specifically wants to target serious cyberbullying and material that promotes self harm and suicide.
The Safety Commissioner would also have a role in regulation video content online to make sure there's parental controls and age verification systems on websites.
